Heavy Reading Survey: 100G to Hit Critical Mass in 2012
As 40G transitions to 100G in 2012, system vendors shipping products with 100Gbit/s ports will double, says Heavy Reading Components Insider

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Jan. 9, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The number of systems vendors shipping products with 100Gbit/s ports will more than double in 2012, as telecom equipment manufacturers accelerate the transition from 40G to 100G technologies, according to results of a new survey analyzed in the latest report from Heavy Reading Components Insider (www.heavyreading.com/commchip), a paid research service of Heavy Reading (www.heavyreading.com).
100G Components User Survey: 2012 Market Outlook presents and analyzes results of a survey conducted by Heavy Reading in late 2011 to assess 100G deployment plans of telecom and network equipment makers. Nearly 90 TEM professionals representing more than 50 different companies participated in the worldwide survey, which included evaluation questions for 40/100G PHY devices and optical modules. Survey respondents rated products from nearly three dozen components manufacturers.

Demand for data traffic across the network is growing rapidly, and this is driving the need for 100G interfaces, says Simon Stanley, research analyst for Heavy Reading Components Insider and author of the report. "The 100G market is divided into three distinct areas: long haul, metro and enterprise, and data center. The industry is developing three distinct 100G technologies – one for each of these three areas," he says. "With six different 100G module form factors defined or in discussion, the industry is already preparing a roadmap that will reduce the cost and increase the density for 100G interfaces."
Survey responses clearly show that 100G interfaces will play a major role in future networking systems, Stanley says. "The companies that will be successful in this area must be able to deliver the 100G performance required for long haul, metro or data center applications and drive a development strategy that will bring the cost reductions the industry has already seen at 10Gbit/s to 40Gbit/s and 100Gbit/s," he adds.
Key findings of 100G Components User Survey: 2012 Market Outlook include the following:
- More than 50 percent of companies will be shipping 100G in at least one system by the end of 2012.
- 84 percent of equipment manufacturers report plans to ship 100G ports within four years.
- Long-haul DWDM is the leading application for 100G, closely followed by Metro Ethernet equipment.
- 100GBase-LR4 is the leading 100GE port type, with 100GBase-SR10 catching up quickly.
- A quarter of vendors have developed coherent receiver internally, rather than using a merchant solution.
- Broadcom is the leading PHY vendor in terms of usage and quality ratings, while Finisar leads the pack in both usage and rating for optical modules.
- Cisco is the leading coherent solution vendor, following its CoreOptics acquisition.
