Drivers of mHealth Models in Africa & the Middle East
May 23, 2012
CAMBRIDGE, Mass., May 23, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Mobile health in Africa & the Middle East (AME) is developing quickly, but there are differences in drivers and characteristics of the mHealth models employed in each of these areas, according to a new report from Pyramid Research (www.pyr.com).
Drivers of mHealth Models in Africa & the Middle East examines the MNO-backed mobile health services model in the Middle East and highlights the best practices that have helped operators in this region expand the reach of healthcare access. Next, Pyramid Research provides an overview of the mHealth model in Africa, supported by two major mHealth services examples that are run in conjunction with mobile network operators. Then Pyramid analyzes mobile health service technology developments made in Africa, assessing how and why innovators and entrepreneurs helped facilitated solutions to pressing needs in healthcare service delivery. This analysis will also point out where innovators and entrepreneurs in the Middle East should devote resources if they wish to realize similar progress in their countries. Finally, four case studies from the region are presented.

"In the Middle East, mHealth is driven by operators looking to expand into adjacent opportunities that leverage communication and mobile platforms to provide customers with life-enhancing value-added services," says Ronda Zelezny-Green, Associate Research Analyst at Pyramid Research. In sub-Saharan Africa, mHealth is driven by NGOs and public-private partnerships in order to find alternative platforms to overcome limited resources, limited access and poor infrastructure in the health sector. "This in turn creates two types of mobile health ecosystems in AME, with varying approaches and services on offers," she notes.
