Meet the Superstars of Engineering & Technology Design at UBM Tech's DESIGN West 2013

SAN FRANCISCO, April 22, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The DESIGN West Conference & Exhibition will once again bring together the superstars of engineering and technology development at the industry's most comprehensive and longest-running professionals-only event, with the iconic Embedded Systems Conference celebrating its 25^th anniversary.  Organized by the UBM Tech, DESIGN West 2013 will take place April 22-25, 2013 at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center in California.  Engineers will speak on overcoming diabolical design challenges-on projects ranging from the Mars Curiosity Rover to Raspberry Pi.

In response to the wave of hardware startups gaining momentum in Silicon Valley, DESIGN West is launching a new format this year featuring entrepreneurial engineers who will discuss how they overcame the vexing challenges associated with getting a new product to market. Keynote Luke Dubord, Avionics Systems Engineer, NASA JPL, will describe how the Mars Curiosity Rover engineering team succeeded in the face of seemingly impossible design constraints.

Additional sessions include Raspberry Pi Hardware Engineer, Gert Van Loo, discussing his challenges in the session "Why design is easy and production is a nightmare."  Kickstarter Entrepreneurs, Bob Baddeley of Portable Scores and Pierre Michael of Party Robotics, will share their trials and tribulations as electronics engineers coping with hardware issues in the sessions "An Engineer's Guide to Braving the Hardware Startup World" and the "DIY Gadget Lab."  Engineer Michael Feldman also will demo the world's first Internet-enabled trash can in his session "M2M Garbage or Dr. Who's TARDIS Trash Can."

DESIGN West is also excited to announce the debut of the world's first motorized propeller beanie mesh network on Tuesday, April 23, 2013.  During a hands-on workshop at the Expo led by David Ewing, CTO of Synapse-Wireless, attendees will learn how to program and customize the control and communication functions of their own "cranial cooling system."  Two hundred engineers wearing propeller beanies will gather for a special ceremony on the show floor at 6:00 p.m. to demonstrate the mesh network.
