In this highly visible position, Kraft will be the public face and community leader of EE Times, as well as conference director for DESIGN West, an annual industry-leading event for the electronics industry. He will be responsible for creating and procuring high-impact, unique content that engages electronics design engineers, with a focus on the underlying systems, hardware and software and the principles of good design—both online and at DESIGN West.
An engaging on- as well as off-camera presence with a keen understanding of the engineering sub-culture, Kraft has extensive broadcasting skills and experience in producing entertaining video segments that showcase hacker projects. Leveraging this expertise, Kraft will develop an online video show for EE Times, showcasing offbeat and irreverent projects that exemplify good design practices and engineering problem solving.
Kraft was most recently Senior Editor at Hackaday.com, where for three years he has been visiting garages and basements around the globe—both on-line and in-person--and exploring the things techies build in their free time. An enthusiastic tinkerer, Kraft has extensive hands-on experience with hardware and software and is always ready to take on new engineering challenges.
While at Hackaday.com, Kraft doubled the traffic, through a combination of highly compelling content, deep understanding of the community's needs, and social media outreach. He also launched thecontrollerproject.com, a community where tinkerers and modders are paired with users with special physical needs for game controls and work with them to develop custom input devices.
"We are thrilled that Caleb Kraft is joining EE Times as Chief Community Leader," said Karen Field, Senior VP – Content and General Manager, DESIGN West. "Caleb's experience as a community leader and his unique ability to bridge the hacker and professional engineering communities with his deep understanding of how to create content that is both entertaining and educational is an enormous asset for EE Times and DESIGN West."
Kraft is based in Springfield, Missouri and will report to Kelley Damore, Chief Community Officer, UBM Tech. "Caleb has experience tapping into the passion of engineers through a community model. We are excited to have him bring that passion to EE Times and our DESIGN live events. This approach fits with our new community-led UBM Tech editorial strategy," said Damore.
