CMP Media (NASDAQ: UNEWY) today announced that the event keynote address at the upcoming Communications Design Conference will focus on staying competitive in a difficult market and the coming era of new services for more balanced networks. Delivered by industry veteran Dave House, president and chief executive officer of Allegro Networks, the talk is one of four keynote speeches that will provide insights into the future of communications design.
The Communications Design Conference, running from October 1-4, 2001 at the San Jose Convention Center (San Jose, Calif.), is a forum for electronics design engineers and technical managers to learn practical skills, meet colleagues and strategic suppliers, and discover new ideas for designing communications systems. In addition to House's event keynote address, the Communications Design Conference will feature three daily keynote speeches from senior executives at C-PORT Corporation, Nortel, and Sycamore Networks.
Disruption Rules
Dave House's event keynote speech will take place on Tuesday, October 2 at 5:00 p.m. In his address, "The Law of Disruption and Its Impact on Communications Design," House will discuss the effects of tightening markets on the development of communications technologies, and the search for products that can generate new revenue sources for service providers. In addition, House will address the pressure that designers feel to increase profits by making incremental advances in communications design rather than "disruptive" advances, which he contends are necessary for maintaining a competitive edge.
"We created the death of distance, but we choke on access," said House. "Our networks are out of balance, a result of the bandwidth advances in long distance fiber networks and failures of DSL and other access technologies to match that bandwidth. As we address these issues with fiber to businesses and fiber to the neighborhood 'pedestals,' enabling short length copper and wireless connections, we will enable an era of new services that will deliver the long promised new world of the internet."
House is a 34-year veteran of the high-technology industry. He spent 22 years of his career at Intel Corp., where he headed "Intel Inside," one of the most successful marketing programs in campaign history. House oversaw the development of Intel's leading microprocessor product line up, prior to, and including the Pentium Processor. Starting his career in 1965 as a designer for Raytheon, House's career included positions with Honeywell, Microdata and Bay Networks, where as chairman and chief executive officer, he led the transition when the company merged with Nortel, where he served as president.
Daily Keynote Addresses
Dr. Larry Walker, chief executive officer at C-PORT Corporation, will deliver a keynote address on Tuesday, October 2 at 1:00 p.m., titled, "The Impact of Semiconductors on the Networked World." Recognized as one of the most powerful people in networking by NETWORK WORLD magazine, Dr. Walker will share his insights on the convergence of the networking and semiconductor industries and the symbiotic relationships between them. Dr. Al Javed, chief technology officer, Wireless Internet, at Nortel, will speak about "Technologies for 3G Wireless Systems Evolution & Beyond," on Wednesday, October 3 at 2:00 p.m. His address will focus on the impact of technologies such as space-time coding, antenna array processing, dynamic modulation and coding, and interference cancellation. Javed, who served on the faculties of the University of Alberta and the University of Engineering and Technology, Pakistan before joining Nortel, is on the Board of Directors of the Canadian Institute of Telecommunications Research and Sigpro Wireless, Inc.
Jeff Kiel, vice president and general manager, core switching, at Sycamore Networks, delivers the final track keynote speech, on Thursday, October 4 at 1:00 p.m. Titled, "Transition Toward a Data Optimized Network," the talk addresses the current migration to an all-switched infrastructure optimized for data transmission. He will address intelligent wavelength management, the development of optical and IP interfaces, the changing dynamics of the public network, and intelligence in optical switches.
In his current role at Sycamore Networks, Jeff Kiel manages product strategy, product engineering and development, and product marketing, and is responsible for bringing the company's intelligent optical switches to market. Kiel has worked for Ascend Communications, and Bell South Telecommunications, and is the author of many national, international, and ATM forum standards.
Plenary Panel Sessions
In addition to event and daily keynote speeches, the Communications Design Conference also offers plenary panel sessions led by respected industry professionals throughout the week. The sessions, which will address some of the leading issues in communications technologies, include:
-- Baseband Architectures for 3G Mobile Devices -- 10-and 40-Gig Design -- Tackling Voice-over-Broadband System Design -- So What the Heck is a Residential Gateway? -- High-End Router Design
The Communications Design Conference focuses on wired, optical and wireless technologies for building the communications products, systems and equipment that will shape tomorrow's enterprise, infrastructure, home and personal communication devices. The keynotes and panel discussions highlight an extensive educational program, including 80 conference sessions and 150 papers on leading-edge design issues. A two-day product exhibition will feature more than 100 companies showing the latest communication design products.
The Communications Design Conference is produced by CMP Media LLC and is sponsored by COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS DESIGN magazine and EE TIMES.
