CMP Media (NASDAQ: UNEWY) today announced that the educational program at the Embedded Systems Conference Boston will highlight tools to simplify programming complexity and implement Open Source technologies in embedded applications.
"Model-based code generation is potentially a very explosive area for the future of software development in general," said Michael Barr, editor-in-chief, Embedded Systems Programming magazine. "The conference program reflects the growing importance of UML and other methods for working with the increasingly large and complex software component of embedded systems."
The Embedded Systems Conference Boston is the East Coast's largest exhibition and educational forum for embedded professionals, running from September 4-7, 2001 at the Hynes Convention Center. The four-day event includes 84 classes and tutorials, product exposition and two keynote presentations. Michael Tiemann, chief technology officer of Red Hat, will address the role of Open Source software in embedded applications, and Cliff Stoll will provide entertaining commentary on the current state and future forms of technology.
In addition to 15 classes on Unified Modeling Language (UML) and efficiencies in code generation, the program's educational sessions also include timely topics such as system design, the embedded Internet, hardware design, C/C++ programming and Open Source software.
Classes with a focus on model-based code generation include: -- Extreme Modeling -- State Machines and Statecharts -- The Real-Time UML Standard: Definition and Application -- Implementing a UML Specification on a Real-Time Executive -- Managing the Risks of Adopting UML -- Architectural Patterns for Complex Embedded Systems
Barr also anticipates a strong reaction to Michael Tiemann's keynote address on Thursday. "As a pioneer of the open source movement and an important player in the emerging market for Embedded Linux, it will be extremely interesting to hear how Tiemann thinks the open source movement will impact embedded design," said Barr.
Tiemann's keynote address titled, "Open Source in Embedded: Dilemma or Delight?" will be delivered on Thursday, September 6, from 12:30 p.m. - 1:30 p.m. He will address the looming embedded marketplace question: "Will open source software change the world of embedded systems, or will embedded systems bring about a change in open source software?"
Tiemann's early work with GNU software inspired many developments in the open source industry, and enabled the first Linux technologies. A respected industry leader, he continues to shape the future of open source as it drives the next generation of embedded, post-PC computing devices.
Clifford Stoll's speech, "Reflections of a Computer Contrarian," will take place on Wednesday, September 5, from 1:00 p.m.- 2:00 p.m. Stoll will discuss Internet "obsession" and the effects of too much technology on learning systems, libraries, and society.
An exceptionally popular speaker, Clifford Stoll is best known for single-handedly tracking and uncovering the "Hanover Hacker," a member of an underground Internet spy-ring. Stoll's story was featured on the cover of the New York Times, and is described in his book, The Cuckoo's Egg: Tracking a Spy Through the Maze of Computer Espionage. A one-time UNIX programmer and computer security expert, Stoll holds a Ph.D. in astronomy.
Other special events at the Embedded Systems Conference Boston include early morning shop talk sessions where attendees can discuss their successes and challenges in informal moderated sessions and a baseball-themed opening night reception on Wednesday, September 5, from 5:30 p.m.- 7:00 p.m. On Tuesday, September 4, attendees will have the opportunity to hear from embedded programmers with experience using Java to write firmware in a panel entitled "Is Java Ready for Embedded Use?" The conference also includes a product exhibition with more than 180 leading vendors of hardware, software and services for embedded systems.
