CMP Media (NASDAQ: UNEWY) today announced that the Communications Design Conference will take place as planned, from October 1-4, 2001 in San Jose, California. The decision to proceed was made with input from exhibitors, speakers and attendees, who supported CMP Media's commitment to present the technical conference and product exhibition.

"Every one of us at CMP Media was saddened by the September 11 tragedy," said Donna Esposito, vice president, CMP Media Electronics Group. "We feel an obligation to support the nation's goal to resume business activity, and with the encouragement we received from the companies and people involved with the event, we believe it is important to move ahead with the Communications Design Conference."

The conference exhibition, covering 93,000 sq. ft. in the San Jose Convention Center, will include 114 companies showing the latest components and tools for building communications equipment, systems and infrastructure. The tools and technologies on display will enable an array of new and interesting devices, ranging from a personal digital postcard, to sophisticated touch-screen web phones, advanced radar systems and more. The show floor opens at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 2 and runs from 11:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 3 and from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 4.

The Communications Design Conference is a forum for engineers and technical managers to learn practical skills, meet colleagues and strategic suppliers, and discover new ideas for designing communication systems for wired, optical, and wireless technologies. Among the tools and components for wireless systems, the show floor features Radio and Intermediate Frequency (RF/IF) and baseband semiconductors, DSP and CPU boards, wireless test equipment, as well as operating systems and development tools. For wired systems, new products include communications processors, physical layer ICs, and switching fabrics, as well as boards, test equipment and software.

Exhibitors include companies such as austriamicrosystems, Inc., Chameleon Systems, Intel Corporation, Marvel Semiconductor, Ltd., Motorola Corporation, NewMonics, Inc., RF Engines Ltd., Texas Instruments, and Xilinx, Inc. Among show floor highlights are a single chip designed to enable an advanced touch screen web phone, for inexpensive and easy-to-use access to global networks, e-mail, browsing, and shopping on the World Wide Web. A new IP core for real-time signal analysis of ultra wideband signals that also provides high performance filtering across hundreds of channels will also be demonstrated. It will enable next generation radar and signal intelligence systems as well as mobile phone base stations.

A Personal Digital Postcard device that enables the user to create and preview a picture, and send it by e-mail complete with an audio message will also be demonstrated. The device runs on the Microsoft WinCE operating system and uses the Texas Instruments OMAP(tm) Evaluation Module.

  Other new products on the show floor include:
  * Software tools that enable the design and deployment of baseband
    communication infrastructure that supports field updates, multiprotocol
    applications and Real-Time response to environmental conditions and
    data/voice traffic volumes.

  * A 0.15 micron CMOS 10 Gigabit ethernet transceiver, offering high
    performance with minimal power usage.

  * A high-level platform for intelligent networks based on a Java compliant
    virtual machine.

  * A digital receiver chip that provides five MHz output bandwidth mode for
    3G systems.

  * An IC for integration into communications systems that combines a modem
    and TPC forward error correction.

  * Tools for implementing custom algorithms on Real-Time reconfigurable
    platforms.

In addition to the exhibition, the event features an educational program with more than 80 courses and tutorials that will focus on eight tracks, including Portable/Wireless Appliances, Wireless Infrastructure, Broadband Access/Backbone Design, Internetworking Equipment Design, Optical Communications: Systems and Components, Systems and Infrastructure, Software/Middleware, and Home Networking Design.

  Special events include five plenary panel discussions:
  * Baseband Architectures for 3G Mobile Devices
  * 10- and 40-Gig Design
  * Voice-Over-Broadband System Design
  * So What the Heck is a Residential Gateway?
  * High-End Router Design

Free-form shop-talk discussions and four keynote addresses also highlight the exhibition. Industry experts, including Dave House, Allegro Networks president and chief executive officer, will deliver keynote addresses beginning on October 2.
