CMP Media today announced preliminary attendance figures for the recent Communications Design Conference, which was held October 1-4, 2001. Attendance at the inaugural event exceeded initial projections, with 3,882 design engineers, technical managers and project managers from 44 countries. Despite difficult economic and political conditions, these solid numbers reflect growing confidence in the communications industry and underscore CMP Media's reputation for quality educational events.
"We're grateful to the exhibitors and speakers whose commitment to keep the event on track made it a huge success," said Donna Esposito, Vice President, Conference and Events, CMP Media Electronics Group. "Attendees matched the commitment of exhibitors and speakers by showing up in greater numbers than we had originally projected."
The exhibit floor, which covered 93,000 sq. ft. at the San Jose Convention Center, featured 111 leading communications companies including Agere Systems, Avnet, Cadence, Hitachi, Intel, MEMSCAP, Texas Instruments and Xilinx. Exhibitors showcased an array of components and tools for building wired, optical and wireless communications equipment, systems and infrastructure including radio and intermediate frequency (RF/IF) and baseband semiconductors, DSP and CPU boards, switching fabrics, test equipment, communications processors, 10- and 40-Gbit transceivers, photonic switches, DWDM interfaces, operating systems and development tools.
Dave House, President and CEO of Allegro Networks, opened the event with a standing room only keynote address. House discussed how disruptive change will lead the communications industry out of the current technology recession. In addition, 270 industry experts from 175 communications companies presented technical tutorials, workshops and panel discussions in eight focused tracks: Portable/Wireless Appliances, Wireless Infrastructure, Broadband Access/Backbone Design, Internetworking Equipment Design, Optical Communications Systems and Components, Systems and Infrastructure, Software/Middleware, and Home Networking Design. Speakers included Doug Grant, Business Development Director, Analog Devices, Inc., Linley Gwennap, Founder, President and Principal Analyst, The Linley Group, Fred Harris, CUBIC Signal Processing Chair, San Diego State University and Allen Podell, VP of Technology, Besser Associates, Inc.
The 2002 Communications Design Conference will return to the San Jose Convention Center September 23 - 26, 2002. Exhibitors are expressing enthusiasm and have already booked 80 percent of next year's exhibit space. Abstracts for the 2002 event can be submitted online at http://www.commdesignconference.com/cfa.
