CMP Media (NASDAQ: UNEWY) today announced strong pre-show registration for its Embedded Systems Conference (ESC) Boston (www.embedded.com/esc) to be held in the Hynes Convention Center, September 15-18, 2003. Early numbers indicate that ESC Boston, the East Coast's premier educational forum for engineers and engineering managers developing processor-based systems, is expected to attract more than 3,000 members of the embedded computing community.
"Developing low-cost, "smart" products, continues to be a major challenge for embedded systems developers," stated Lindsey Vereen, conference director. "The goal of the Embedded Systems Conference Boston is to deliver a robust training program that offers practical information about methodologies that engineers can use to solve real-life design challenges."
More than 120 exhibitors including Motorola, Green Hills Software, Mentor Graphics, Tektronix and Xilinx are slated to exhibit. ESC Boston provides attendees with the opportunity to experience the latest embedded hardware and software technology products, as well as to explore solutions critical to embedded design challenges.
"Motorola Computer Group is focusing on new market opportunities as we continue to provide our customers with complete solutions built to industry standards," said Wendy Vittori, vice president and general manager, Motorola Computer Group. "At this year's Embedded Systems Conference Boston, we will be highlighting our standards-based technologies that allow customers to enhance their products and get them to market quickly and cost effectively. This event provides an excellent opportunity for us to meet new and existing customers in person, strengthen relationships, and educate attendees on our latest product developments through product demos and technical workshops on the exhibit floor."
Embedded in Action- Demo Event
In addition to the exhibit floor and classes, attendees can also partake in this year's ESC Boston Embedded in Action event, which features demonstrations of end-user and consumer products powered by innovative embedded technology. The following product demonstrations can be seen from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Tues. Sept 16 at booth #323:
EXHIBITOR PRODUCT DEMONSTRATION Applied Data Systems UniComp's CS 1500 is a small portable point of sale (POS) device featuring a large display for extended graphic capabilities. The CS 1500 uses a low power-consuming ADS BitsyX from Applied Data Systems. InHand Electronics, Inc. Raytheon's Defense Advanced GPS Receiver (DAGR) is a handheld precision positioning device for soldiers. The DAGR is powered by InHand's Fingertip, a credit-card size, low-power, single board computer, based on Intel's StrongARM/XScale CPU and Microsoft's Windows CE operating system. LynuxWorks The Improved Data Modem (IDM) allows all aspects of the battlefield, including aviation units, ground forces and shipborne systems, to communicate digitally in real-time. The IDM was used in the Apache Longbow, Chinook, Kiowa Warrior, and Blackhawk Army helicopters during the war in Iraq. LynuxWorks' LynxOS real-time operating system (RTOS) was selected to provide the hard real-time capability required, as well as full POSIX conformance, assuring complete code portability between systems. Xilinx, Inc. ELAN, a personal microcomputer controlled Alcohol Breath Tester is designed to measure an individual's blood alcohol concentration. ELAN uses state-of-the-art Xilinx CoolRunner-II CPLD technology to measure the level of alcohol. Xilinx, Inc. More than 100,000 Barryvox beacons are used all over the world by rescue organizations, ski patrols, helicopter skiing companies, armies and individuals for their snow ventures. Designed using Xilinx CoolRunner-II CPLDs, the Barryvox beacon has a superior range of more than 120 meters to provide an ultra-fast initial search in an emergency situation. Xilinx, Inc. W.A.V.E.S. is the first in the world to converge a Proprietary Video Protocol (PVP) encoded platform with analog technology and a new Interactive Viewing Terminal (IVT), to develop the innovative Kangaroo.tv. Kangaroo.tv is the world's first wireless audio visual entertainment system designed to enhance spectator experience at a variety of sporting events worldwide. Using Xilinx's low cost Spartan Series chips, this user-friendly handheld device offers access to a broad range of event-specific audio and video material. Xilinx, Inc. The Interativa 68-billion color LED display system uses Xilinx's Spartan Series and Virtex-II Platform FPGAs and features the MicroBlaze 32-bit soft processor core. The Interativa LED display is capable of rendering more than 68 billion different shades of color. Event Keynote
On Tuesday, September 16, 10:15 a.m. - 11:30 a.m., Jack Ganssle, writer for Embedded Systems Programming, will explore the "Lessons We Haven't Learned" and the potential risks associated with firmware problems. Ganssle will provide a "lore of firmware disasters," with stories of both well known and largely unfamiliar system crashes, all of which resulted from poor software engineering. He will look at each crash, and extract must-learn lessons that attendees can use to help rethink their product development strategies.
Timely Educational Sessions
ESC Boston's 70+ conference sessions will delve into hot design topics, including wireless, serial communications, Linux/Open Source, real-time development and software design. These sessions will focus on delivering the technical insight necessary to make embedded system designs better, faster, and more reliable. Each class and tutorial will also provide practical answers to the toughest questions, and teach skills and techniques that can be implemented immediately.
