"This awards program has been in existence since 1993 and over the years has highlighted many industry trends – this year is no different. We are very pleased to showcase the top products of the many thousands announced during the past year that especially caught the attention of our editors and readers," said Rich Pell, Executive Editor, EDN and Designlines.
Industry trends include:
- The appearance of more complex mixed-signal chips and combinations of mechanical, electrical, and optical subsystems
- The push for smaller, cooler, and more efficient devices, which saw more parts using exotic semiconductor processes like silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN) – as well as more sophisticated power architectures
- A new category – Optoelectronics and Lighting Control – reflecting the growing importance of electronic control in efficient lighting
- The increased presence of low-power wireless and embedded communications products – continuing evidence of the trend toward the "Internet of Things"
- Several engineering-related products – including an app – designed to be used with consumer handhelds, recognizing the impact of consumer devices such as the iPhone and iPad
