Michael Barr, Internationally Recognized Embedded Systems Expert, to Keynote EE Live! 2014 on Embedded Software Safety
Learn How Safety Critical Design Must Drive the Future of Automotive Electronics
Dec 5, 2013
SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 5, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- UBM Tech's EE Live! 2014, the industry's largest and most comprehensive electronics technology conference and expo in the United States, today announced that leading authority on the design of embedded computer systems Michael Barr, CTO and co-founder of Barr Group will present the keynote address "KILLER APPS: Embedded Software's Greatest Hit Jobs" on Tuesday April 1, 2014 at 9:30 am. Barr is a renowned authority in software development and security of automotive electronics.

Barr was an expert witness in the Toyota sudden unintended acceleration cases, see complete coverage on EE Times. In October 2013, he testified in a jury trial in Oklahoma that led to the first "guilty by software defects" finding against Toyota. Between 1985 and 1987, in at least six distinct accidents, the Therac-25 radiation therapy machine delivered up to 100 times the prescribed radiation dose, resulting in injury and death. These high-profile accidents demonstrated that embedded software can be dangerous, even lethal. In the decades since, and despite increasing regulation, safety-critical system failures have continued to kill people. Safety standards and guidelines have been ratified and promoted, but are not mandated or followed in all industries. As embedded software's size and complexity continue to increase rapidly, user safety increasingly relies upon safe and reliable firmware implementations. Nowhere is this more evident than in the automotive industry, where self-driving vehicles are a much-hyped and potentially invaluable part of our future. Barr will offer EE Live! attendees an engaging discussion of the past, present, and future of embedded software safety.
Karen Field, SVP Editorial Director, EE Times and GM, EE Live!, said, "EE Live! is where the world's top design engineers and product developers come together to learn, gain inspiration and celebrate engineering. We are thrilled to welcome Michael Barr as our keynote speaker. Since this topic of embedded system safety in automobiles has been forefront in the news recently, it will be very interesting to hear Michael's opinions."
Barr is the author of three books and more than seventy articles and has served as editor-in-chief of Embedded Systems Programming magazine and adjunct professor of electrical and computer engineering at The University of Maryland. As an engineer and a consultant, Barr has been involved in the design of products ranging from consumer electronics to safety-critical medical devices. In addition, software he wrote continues to power millions of products. As an expert witness, Barr has testified in high-profile software and products liability litigation, including against Toyota in various unintended acceleration lawsuits. Barr holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in electrical engineering and has lectured in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Maryland, from which he also earned an MBA.
EE Live! 2014 will feature the flagship Embedded Systems Conference (ESC); along with the Black Hat Embedded Security Summit, the Internet Of Things (IoT) Engineering Summit, the Hardware Startup Engineering Summit, as well as Engineering Boot Camps on C++, FPGA and Android, as well as an exhibition of 200+ leading electronics vendors and solution providers.
