Despite being hit by the global downturn in 2009, the Netherlands' prospects for growth look promising, as total market revenue is expected to grow to $18.5 billion by 2015, fueled by high-speed broadband investments and an increase in triple-play and quad-play packages, according to a new report from Pyramid Research (www.pyr.com).
Netherlands: New Competitors Will Lead the Way to Quad-Play Services delivers a full accounting of the Dutch telecom sector, including a full breakout of network operator revenues and market share by network service type (fixed services, mobile services, and pay TV). The 30-page report provides a five-year demand forecast for telecom services in the Netherlands, broken out by seven different service types, as well as a five-year forecast of mobile service uptake by technology type. It includes a detailed analysis of the Dutch regulatory and economic environment and offers action points for network operators, vendors, and investors. Pyramid expects quad-play bundles to accelerate after 2012 as mobile data and fixed broadband will have the strongest growth during the forecast period driving data revenue's total to increase 8 percent over the forecast period. This will drive network investments, both in access and transmission. Despite market consolidation over the past few years, competition remains strong, particularly in the fixed broadband market, which is being driven by these higher-speed network investments, notes Jan ten Sythoff, Analyst at Large at Pyramid Research and author of this report. "Higher-speed broadband access and bundling are important market trends for operators to maintain and increase their market share," indicates Sythoff.
As VoIP and fixed broadband grow to be part of the top three fastest growing segments of the Dutch telecom market, they will be eliminating circuit switched lines from the telecom mix by the end of the forecast period. To compensate for the decline, Dutch operators are looking to bundling to increase revenue. "Triple-play adoption is forecast to overtake double-play adoption in 2012. Mobile will become an increasingly important element of bundles for those operators that can use it to differentiate," says Sythoff.
