Rebounding from the economic recession, Germany will resume growth as one of the largest telecommunications markets in Europe over the next five years fueled by growth in broadband, according to a new report from Pyramid Research (www.pyr.com).
Germany: 'Digital Dividend' to Spur Increase in Mobile Data Services offers a precise profile of the country's telecommunications, media, and technology sectors based on proprietary data collected and analyzed by Pyramid. This 30-page report provides detailed competitive analysis of both the fixed and mobile sectors, tracks the market shares of technologies and services, and monitors the introduction and spread of new technologies. The growth of broadband in German telecommunications will be a key component to growth, as Pyramid forecasts that it will drive growth in the fixed segment more than compensating for the decline in fixed voice caused by disconnections of circuit-switched lines. Demand for bandwidth and quality to support multimedia applications will increase the need for broadband uptake, notes Sylwia Boguszewska, analyst at Pyramid Research and author of the report.
"Broadband is a key service, and although consolidation has reduced the number of players, the focus on next-generation technologies (i.e. fiber, Docsis 3.0, HSDPA+, and LTE) will be central to long-term success," says Boguszewska. "The federal government's national broadband plan stipulates that by 2014, 75 percent of households should have access to broadband with transmission rates of at least 50 Mbit/s."
"We believe that contrary to fixed-to-mobile substitution tendencies elsewhere in Western Europe, the shares of fixed and mobile revenues in the total German telecom pie will stay stable over the next five years. This projection is based on the expected rapid growth of the German broadband access market, propelled by the government's focus on bringing Internet connectivity to all Germans," adds Boguszewska.
