TechWeb's Light Reading (www.lightreading.com), the leading online publication for the telecom industry, and Heavy Reading (www.heavyreading.com), its prestigious market research division, produced their latest virtual event, Packet Backhaul 2010: Scaling Up to Bring Costs Down, on February 4, with 1,430 registrants, 627 attendees, and 7 sponsors.

The Packet Backhaul 2010 virtual event was built off the success of Light Reading's nine backhaul-focused live events held in New York, Atlanta, and London over the past four years, plus more than 15 related Webinars. Heavy Reading's leading mobile backhaul experts moderated the virtual event. Packet Backhaul 2010 kicked off with research led by Heavy Reading Senior Analyst Patrick Donegan; Heavy Reading Senior Analysts Gabriel Brown and Jim Hodges also moderated sessions. The program explored the ongoing challenges that mobile operators continue to face in scaling up their initial packet backhaul deployments, and examined the tools and solutions they are adopting to accelerate the rate of deployment.

Packet Backhaul 2010 speakers included Yiannis Argyropoulos, Principal Member of Technical Staff from AT&T, and Terje Jensen, Research Manager for Telenor, as well as a keynote from Platinum sponsor Aviat Networks SVP and Chief Marketing Officer Shaun McFall. Other sponsors that provided speakers for the event included Aviat Networks, as Platinum sponsor; Fujitsu, as Gold sponsor; and Bronze sponsors Ceragon, Cyan, EXFO, Symmetricom, and Transmode.

The virtual event was promoted extensively via Light Reading's network of 300,000 unique visitors. With a registration goal of 1,000 registrants, the Packet Backhaul 2010 surpassed goals with more than 1,400 registrants and 600 attendees

"A common theme running throughout the sessions was that taking the TDM-to-packet transition in the backhaul from the powerpoint slide and implementing it on a large scale in the field are proving to be very different things," says Heavy Reading's Patrick Donegan. " Most operators won't begin this transition until 2010 or 2011, so the infrastructure market is still highly competitive."

Packet Backhaul 2010, which took place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET, included all the elements of a live event and more, such as an auditorium with six different panel sessions, one keynote session, live Q&A, and chat/networking sessions in the virtual lounge after each panel and keynote, with participation from Light Reading editors, Heavy Reading analysts, sponsors, and attendees. Additionally, exhibitor booths with downloadable materials were on the virtual tradeshow floor with chat features allowing suppliers and buyers to interact.
