New InformationWeek Reports Research Finds Only 27% of Companies Have Comprehensive Identity Management Deployments

70% of IT pros not adopting or investigating identity management don't see a need for IdM.

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 6, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- InformationWeek Reports, a service for peer-based IT research and analysis, announced the release of its latest research report; Identity Management: SaaS, Mobility Add Urgency encompasses analysis results from InformationWeek's IdM survey and guides readers in making the right identity management choices. Nearly 440 business technology professionals responded to this poll. The report author, Michael A. Davis, is CEO of Savid Technologies, a technology and security consulting firm based in Chicago.

Research Summary:

Nearly three-quarters of the 438 IT pros surveyed say their organizations lack comprehensive identity management deployments, defined as company-wide internal IdM plus cross-domain use for outside vendors and partners. Meanwhile, vendors report that they keep tweaking their IdM offerings in an effort to reduce costs and jump-start enterprise adoption, which seems to have stalled.

Findings:  

  • Just 27% of survey respondents say their companies have comprehensive deployments, defined as company-wide internal IdM plus cross-domain use for outside vendors and partners.
  • 81% of IdM users have had the technology in place for more than a year—only 9% have implemented it within the past year.
  • Among respondents with IdM, 48% say they use external identity management measures to interface with outside business partners and vendors; 31% have no plans to do so, and the rest claim they'll implement it within 24 months.
  • Of those who haven't implemented IdM, 70% say they don't see any need for it; just 9% cite insufficient maturity, 5% cite complexity and 4% name cost as the primary reason they've chosen to skip it.
