Latin American Operator Strategies for Postpaid Growth

Oct 3, 2012

BOSTON, Oct. 3, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Latin America operators in highly concentrated markets are best positioned to pursue a postpaid strategy; however, operators in any market can successfully grow their postpaid base with the right initiatives revealed in a new report from Pyramid Research (www.pyr.com).

Part of Pyramid's Telecom Insider series, this new 24-page report Latin American Operator Strategies for Postpaid Growth takes a deeper look into the Latin American postpaid market. The report identifies the opportunity to enhance customer loyalty as the primary driver for operators to pursue a postpaid strategy. The efficacy of operator initiatives such as hybrid plans, on-net pricing, handset subsidies and retail expansion, given different contextual factors is examined. The case study of Argentinean operator Telecom Personal, which is using handset subsidies to improve the postpaid-to-prepaid ratio is presented along with the cases of Peruvian operators Movistar and Claro, focusing on their postpaid strategies. Finally, a case study from Turkey is introduced as an international benchmark where the incumbent Turkcell has been successful at migrating subscribers to postpaid by leveraging handset subsidies for low-cost smartphones and by extending its retail network.

"It is now well-established that prepaid platforms are not an obstacle to profitability," says Pyramid Research Analyst, Daniele Tricarico. Many operators in the prepaid heavy markets of Latin America show higher operating margins than other players in postpaid markets in Europe. Successful prepaid players in emerging markets have been able to increase profitability by implementing several initiatives. "These include building scale to put pressure on network and device suppliers, maximizing the amount of on-net traffic and offering more flexible on-net pricing, increasing retention through airtime bonuses, and introducing mobile broadband and mobile data plans for pay-as-you-go users," he adds.
