May 9, 2013

BOSTON, May 9, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Global smartphone sales are expected to more than double between 2012 and 2017, reaching close to 1.5 billion units in 2017, with sell-through in emerging markets expected to generate 58 percent of smartphone sales during the period, according to the newest report in the Research in Focus: Smartphones series.

Research in Focus: Smartphones helps clients analyze and keep track of handset, smartphone and gray market handset sell-through trends by country, vendor and region. "While smartphone unit sell-through will grow dramatically in emerging markets during the forecast period, growth in the more developed regions will be far lower," says Pyramid Research Associate Analyst, Guillermo Hurtado. The highest growth rates are expected to occur in the Africa/Middle East (26.3 percent CAGR) and Central and Eastern Europe (24 percent CAGR) regions, due to low initial smartphone penetration rates and improving access to devices. "Asia-Pacific, the largest region in terms of smartphone unit sell-through, will grow at a CAGR of 21.5 percent over the forecast period, contributing much of the growth in the global smartphone market," he adds.

Emerging Markets Will Generate 58% of Smartphone Sales in 2012-2017 is part of Pyramid Research's Research in Focus: Smartphones series and is available through an annual subscription with quarterly updates for $7,490 or as a one-off resource for $3,490.
