Internet Evolution Reports On Hitler Fans, Fringe Groups Seeking Home On LinkedIn

Aug 13, 2013

NEW YORK, Aug. 13, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Hitler fans, Klansmen, sex workers, and drug dealers are looking to find homes on LinkedIn. They're just not doing a good job of it.

Internet Evolution editor in chief Mitch Wagner looks at the dark side of LinkedIn in a special report: "Hate Groups & Hitler-Lovers Seek Homes on LinkedIn"
(http://www.internetevolution.com/author.asp?section_id=466&doc_id=266643). Despite LinkedIn's efforts to police its service, Internet Evolution had no problem locating groups with names including "Hitler Lover" and "United Klans of America," groups selling oxycontin and other drugs, and offers of nude massage and virtual girls. The good news: The groups were small, with fewer than two dozen members.

"We took a humorous approach with this story, but extremist groups are serious business," says Wagner. "As a representative of the Anti-Defamation League told us, extremist groups have been responsible for hundreds of murders in the US over the past 10 years, including the murder of six people at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin a year ago this month. Hate groups frequently use social media to spread ‒ although they've had limited success, at best, on LinkedIn."
