"The regulator body, Conatel, awarded all mobile operators much-needed extra spectrum in the 1800MHz and 1900MHz bands, which will allow them to optimize and improve the quality of their services," says Guillermo Hurtado, Analyst at Pyramid Research. Digitel, the country's smallest mobile operator in terms of subscriptions, is using the awarded 30MHz block (2x15MHz channels) in the 1800MHz band to expand capacity of its HSPA+ network and to deploy its LTE network. Meanwhile, Movistar announced that it won't deploy LTE until 2014, and Movilnet said it is working on launching LTE by year-end 2013, although this is very unlikely.

"Close to 44 percent of the country's mobile subscribers are expected to be connected to 3G networks at the end of 2013, and Pyramid Research expects this number to increase at a CAGR of 16 percent between 2013 and 2018, surpassing the number of 2G connections by 2014," Hurtado explains. "Further, 4G connections are expected to reach 2.2 million by year-end 2018."
