Romania: Convergent Services to Thrive with the Regulatory Push for MVNOs

Sep 19, 2013

BOSTON, Sept. 19, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- In 2013, multiplay penetration of households reached 47.5 percent, with 34.8 percent of all households using triple-play services. While RCS&RDS, Romtelecom and UPC are the main players in multiplay services, Pyramid expects competition to intensify further after the regulator opened the market to MVNOs in 2012, according to a new report from Pyramid Research (www.pyr.com).

"In June 2012, the Romanian regulator approved guidelines to introduce MVNOs into the market," says Olena Kaplan, Associate Analyst at Pyramid Research. At the time of approval, ANCOM reported that 17 licensed operators had expressed interest in operating an MVNO. UPC and Posta Romania are among the larger companies that have announced plans to launch MVNO services.

"The intensified competition is reflected in a number of operators expanding their services where they are not yet present; for example, cable operator UPC said it is entering the mobile market using an MVNO business model, while the leading mobile operator, Orange, has entered the pay-TV segment offering DTH services," Kaplan explains. "Another MVNO entrant to the mobile market, RUNEX Telecom, formerly Enigma Systems, will most likely focus on innovative services, such as using a single number on more than one SIM card," she says.
