CMP Media LLC today announced that next week's Embedded Systems Conference Boston will feature more than 200 companies, including 32 from the Boston area, participating in the East Coast's largest exhibition of computer chips, software tools, and systems for adding intelligence and connectivity to everyday devices. The exhibits, reflecting the latest trends in hardware, software, and systems for embedded systems, are part of a three-day educational conference for builders of intelligent electronic devices.

Running September 4-7 at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston, Mass., the Embedded Systems Conference Boston is a premiere event for engineers, developers and managers working with embedded systems. The show floor, which opens Wednesday afternoon, September 5 and runs through Friday, September 7, is a highlight of the event, which includes an educational program of classes and tutorials and a variety of special events.

A wide variety of intelligent electronic devices, representing the diversity and value of embedded system technology, will be demonstrated on the show floor, including:

-- A Windows Powered digital camera that enables photos and voice
recordings to be e-mailed via cell phone.
-- Hand-held, multimedia devices that run on the Linux operating system.
-- A universal remote control that works across hardware platforms,
     operating systems, and communications protocols.
-- Windows Powered smart telephones with Personal Digital Assistant (PDA)
     functionality.
-- A heads-up display that is worn, like clip-on sunglasses, to replace a
typical monitor or LCD for embedded devices.

"Each year processors are being added to new everyday products, including everything from coffee makers to washing machines," said Lindsey Vereen, conference director. "Besides making products safer, adding new capabilities, and lowering power consumption, putting intelligence in consumer devices paves the way to networking them with other systems in the home, office, and to the Internet. We are on the verge of an era when home networks will be common, opening the door to everything from remote diagnostics of major appliances to remote billing for utilities. The Embedded Systems Conference keeps the engineers who are responsible for creating these connected products up to date on the critical technologies for developing markets."

In addition to the exhibition, the Boston event features an educational program with 80 courses and tutorials on topics such as Unified Modeling Language (UML) and efficiencies in code generation, system design, the embedded Internet, hardware design, C/C++ programming and Open Source software. Keynote speeches will be delivered by Clifford Stoll, author of "The Cuckoo's Egg" and technology critic on Wednesday, September 5 at 1:00 p.m., and Michael Tiemann, chief technology officer of Red Hat on Thursday, September 6 at 12:30 p.m.

Other special events include early morning shop talk sessions where attendees can discuss their successes and challenges in informal moderated sessions and a baseball themed opening night reception on Wednesday, September 5, from 5:30 p.m.- 7:00 p.m. On Tuesday, September 4, attendees will have the opportunity to hear from embedded programmers with experience using Java to write firmware in a panel entitled "Is Java Ready for Embedded Use?"
