CMP's First Intellectual Property Symposium, a Joint Effort of EE Times, Semiconductor Insights and Portelligent, Unveils Industry Leading Keynote and Panel Line-Up
U.S. Patent & Trademark Director, Boston University law professor and former Intel Intellectual Property Director among influential list of speakers to lead Intellectual Property Symposium
Feb 12, 2008
CMP today announced the speaker line-up for the inaugural Intellectual Property Symposium (http://www.eetimes.semiconductor.com/?cid=IPPR), a joint effort of EE Times, Semiconductor Insights and Portelligent, which is scheduled to take place April 15-16, 2008 at the San Jose Fairmont. The symposium is the first and only event to bring together the foremost legal, business and government minds to discuss the importance of properly protecting, managing and leveraging intellectual property. The Intellectual Property Symposium will be co-located with ESC Silicon Valley (http://www.cmp-egevents.com/web/esv/home), the largest electronic systems design event in North America.
The Intellectual Property Symposium will bring together industry leaders under two distinct knowledge tracks, business and technology. These knowledge tracks enable all attendees, including engineers, legal professionals, business managers and executives, to better understand best practices for successfully utilizing intellectual property in the rapidly changing marketplace for embedded design patents.
Intellectual Property Symposium Highlights: The Intellectual Property Symposium will feature the following keynotes:
The Evolution of the Intellectual Property Marketplace will be presented by Peter Detkin (https://www.cmpevents.com/ESCip08/a.asp?option=G&V=3&id=575409), Co-founder, Managing Director, Intellectual Ventures, and former Director, Intellectual Property, Intel, and Mike Meurer (https://www.cmpevents.com/ESCip08/a.asp?option=G&V=3&id=575450), Professor of Law, Boston University School of Law and noted author on the problems of the patent system. The presentation will include an overview of the intellectual property market with a special focus on technology, and a discussion on the inefficiencies and imbalances that have led to opportunities for a variety of new players.
Today's Trends and Tomorrow's Realities in the Intellectual Property Marketplace will be presented by Jon Dudas (https://www.cmpevents.com/ESCip08/a.asp?option=G&V=3&id=575488), Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director, U.S. Patent & Trademark Office, who provides a rare perspective on recent Supreme Court decisions regarding intellectual property, proposed patent modernization legislation, and trends in intellectual property protection and enforcement around the world, including in China.
Expanding on the high-quality keynote conversations, attendees will learn from panel discussions and drill-down sessions discussing:
-- "Open source software" with executives from Hewlett-Packard, Microsoft and MontaVista -- "Issues in silicon intellectual property" featuring top technologists from Intel and Texas Instruments -- "Intellectual property practices in China" with hands-on experience from TSMC and UTStarcom, Inc. -- "How to read and write patents effectively" from noted author David Pressman

Commentary: Mike McLean, vice president of IPinsights, Semiconductor Insights
"The importance of widespread insight into intellectual property laws is critical in today's embedded industry, especially with the rapid innovation in technologies. Without a deep knowledge of today's patent laws and a clear understanding of how to read and write patents, companies are at risk for preventable legal action. The Intellectual Property Symposium will deliver practical and actionable information for the business and legal community as well as the engineers who create the technologies."
Rick Merritt, Editor-at-Large, EE Times
"Intellectual property is one of the most pressing topics in the embedded industry, and there remains a distinct lack of comprehensive resources to educate involved parties on the pertinent details. The new Intellectual Property Symposium fills that gap with an impressive line up of presenters with an extensive background in the industry."
