CMP Media today announced it will produce the Communications Design Conference, a new educational forum that will deliver leading-edge design solutions to engineers and engineering management involved in the development of wired, optical and wireless communication systems and equipment. Slated for October 1-4, 2001, at the San Jose Convention Center, San Jose, Calif., the conference and exhibition will provide comprehensive coverage of the key technologies that are driving growth in the communications market. The conference will feature eight separate educational tracks spanning the optical, wired and wireless application segments of the market and the exhibition will feature more than 100 leading companies.

"Fierce competition in the communications segment of the electronics industry is presenting engineers with significant time-to-market and technology challenges," said Steve Weitzner, group president of CMP Media's Electronics Group. "CMP has a major initiative to support our audience in this segment with print, web and face-to-face information services. Engineers who design and build products for communications want access to educational programs that provide in-depth information and practical solutions to their design challenges. The Communications Design Conference will meet this demand, by offering a comprehensive educational program presented by the world's top communications experts, along with an exhibition that provides attendees with the opportunity to see and learn about cutting-edge chips and cores, board level products, software and design tools."

Explosive Growth Drives Competition and Demand for Education

According to industry analysts, every segment of the market for communications equipment will experience strong growth throughout this decade. Merrill Lynch forecasts the worldwide market for communications equipment will grow from $375 billion in 2000 to $600 billion in 2003. Additionally, the worldwide capital investment in base station and mobile switching system electronic equipment is expected to grow from $58 billion in 2000 to $122 billion in 2005 according to the market research firm, Forward Concepts. Cahners-InStat projects the market for networking equipment will grow to $50 billion by the end of this year. This rapid growth has spawned fierce competition in the market fueling a need for engineers who understand how the technologies behind it interact.

The Communications Design Conference will provide opportunities for professionals to build the skills and knowledge required to overcome the design challenges presented by advanced communications technologies. Key topics addressed will include Bluetooth and third-generation (3G) mobile phone system design, network processors, high-speed switching, home networking, voice-over-packet development, Internet appliances and next generation SONET architectures. In addition to the educational program, the conference will include an exhibition featuring the latest products and technologies from more than 100 leading companies.

The Communications Design Conference is produced by CMP Media, Inc. and is sponsored by COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS DESIGN magazine and ELECTRONIC ENGINEERING TIMES. Other conferences produced by CMP's Electronics tradeshow group include the Embedded Systems Conferences, Embedded Executive Conference, the International Conference on Signal Processing Applications and Technologies, HDI Expo and the PCB Design Conferences.
