CMP Media's 14th annual Embedded Systems Conference Boston (www.esconline.com/boston), the largest embedded systems event on the east coast, opens today at the Hynes Convention Center. The four-day conference is dedicated to showcasing the technological breakthroughs of the industry's Creators of Technology, and will feature more than 90 classes and tutorials, 160 leading exhibitors, and workshops on some of the industry's hottest technologies driving today's global economy and influencing our daily lives.

"Just as celebrities and athletes are globally recognized, the Embedded Systems Conference celebrates the heroes in our community -- rock star engineers who every day, change the way we work, live and play through astounding technological advancements," said Paul Miller, vice president and group publisher of the CMP Media Electronics Group. "ESC Boston 2005 welcomes 160 of the industry's top electronics exhibitors and we are proud to be partnering with so many industry leaders -- those who will be showcasing breakthrough systems several years before they're introduced in the most popular consumer products and industry applications."

Design engineers and engineering managers attending this year's ESC Boston will get a sneak peak of hot technologies presented by 160 of the industry's top hardware and software providers, showcasing innovative technologies and products, September 13-14 on the show floor. Among the exhibitors are Texas Instruments, XILINX, Fujitsu Microelectronics, Intel, Wind River, Echelon, and Sun Microsystems -- many of whom will also be hosting two days of workshops, addressing specific solutions to unique design challenges. Workshops are free to all registered conference attendees and feature programs like "Migration from RTOS to Linux Enables Multi-Core Optimizations" hosted by Intel, "Real- Time and Embedded Java Solutions Seminar" by Sun Microsystems, and "Delivering Added Value With Embedded Speech & Voice Recognition" by IBM. For a complete list of all ESC Boston 2005 exhibitors, visit: http://www.esconline.com/boston/2005/exhibitors.htm.

Throughout the show, conference attendees will also be able to choose from more than 90 classes and tutorials, providing crucial updates on the industry's most pertinent topics. "Principles of Safety-Critical Systems Design" will educate engineers on designing systems that are safe for users and the environment, "Network Updates of Remote Embedded Systems" explores systems and equipment servicing from remote locations, and "Legal Issues for Embedded Systems Developers" gives engineers, managers and entrepreneurs crucial insight on the basics faced in developing and marketing embedded systems. Event Keynote Addresses RFID Technologies

The controversial subject of RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) technology will be addressed at the event's keynote by Avi Rubin, professor of computer science and technical director of the Information Security Institute at Johns Hopkins University, and the founder of Independent Security Evaluators (Tuesday, September 13, 10:15-11:30am). RFID enables small wireless tags to identify merchandise, control inventory, enable online purchases, reduce car theft - the US government is even considering putting RFID tags in passports, and several states are examining RFIDs for driver's licenses. Rubin will address "Security and Privacy Issues in RFID Technologies" describing the two types of RFID systems in use today and the security and privacy concerns introduced by these and future applications.

Embedded Security Seminar focuses on latest trends, tools and design methodologies (September 12-14)

The three-day technical program will feature several one-to-three hour sessions on topics like practical secure hardware design, wireless security, and Internet security. Executives from Nokia, Atmel, Texas Instruments, LynuxWorks, Seagate, Fortify Software and more will address subjects like "Security for Mobile Devices," "Network Security for Embedded Systems," and "Wireless Sensor Networks." Security is a growing concern for the embedded industry, as engineers are being tasked with the critical challenge of securing devices that share data with other devices. CMP Media research has shown that two-thirds of attendee's upcoming embedded design projects are expected to have security considerations. The seminar is sponsored by Innominate Security Technologies AG and SafeNet.

Attendees can register for the Embedded Security Seminar individually, or together with the Embedded Systems Conference Boston.
