UBM Electronics' EDN Announces the Lineup for the September 27 Designing With LEDs Workshop

Addresses the technology design aspects of high-brightness LEDs, principally in lighting and illumination

The hands-on workshop was created for design engineers and systems architects who need to learn and explore drive and control electronics, optics, and thermal management options for the newest generation of solid-state illumination components.  The workshop classes will provide education and training on design considerations for the power drive stage, thermal management options, and secondary optics of LED lighting, including: LED system reliability, de-rating capacitors, dimming considerations, efficiency in drive stages and power factor correction, government and industry guidelines and regulations, selecting secondary optics, and system communication and networking.

Key workshop highlights:

  • The extraordinary new LED light bulb from Philips Lighting, winner of the $10 million, 2011 Bright Tomorrow Lighting Prize from the U.S. Department of Energy, will be on display. The groundbreaking, 10-watt, LED bulb produces light equivalent to that of a 60-watt incandescent bulb and displays unparalleled color quality, light patterns, and smooth, flicker-free dimming.
  • The keynote roundtable "Intelligent Lighting" will be presented by Eric Holland, Vice President, Engineering, Lighting Sciences Group; David Ewing, CTO, Synapse Wireless; and Paul Wilson, Technical Marketing Manager, NXP, and will be moderated by Carol Lenk, CTO, SuperBulbs.  The roundtable will focus on how solid-state lighting enabled by high-brightness LEDs will creep into every facet of daily life within a few years.  Panelists will address the value of intelligent lights; the likely "gotchas" engineers will encounter in designing an inexpensive, ubiquitous, completely autonomous network; and the importance of power control and efficiency in a successful lighting network.
  • The LED manufacturers panel "What's the Best LED White Light Source?" will be presented by the big three LED manufacturers, Paul Scheidt, Product Manager, Cree; Marc Dyble, Product Manager, LED Products, OSRAM Opto Semiconductors; and Chad Stalker, Regional Manager, Americas, Philips Lumileds.  The panel is designed to help designers understand the importance of light quality in LED design.  The panelists will discuss the trade-offs in achieving color quality for white lighting; how to achieve a high CRI; and what role phosphor selection plays.

  • Cary Eskow, Global Director of LED and Lighting Programs at Avnet Electronics, will be hosting a workshop entitled "Systems-level High-brightness LED Design... Across the Spectrum." The session will address the challenges of designing a high-reliability HB LED system, including the interrelated visual, thermal and electrical characteristics that must be considered; as well as new devices within and outside the visual spectrum (ultraviolet and infrared) that hold potential for a wide variety of novel applications, beyond basic illumination. The workshop will include a review of the human eye, fundamental HB LED metrics and illumination terminology, and applied visible/IR/UV photobiology; as well as a walk-through of common thermal calculations.
  • The "LED Driver Design for General Lighting" workshop session by International Rectifier will offer an introduction to LED driver design followed by a discussion of the different converter topologies used. Power factor correction and triac dimmer compatibility will be discussed, along with tradeoffs against efficiency and cost.
  • "Lightning Talks," a series of brief, fast-paced, editorially-selected talks focused on the newest breakthroughs in energy-efficient, smart lighting, will feature expert speakers Carol Lenk of SuperBulbs, Dan Schlitz of Ventiva, Brian Johnson of Fairchild Semiconductor and Peter DiMaso of Texas Instruments.
