CMP Media's SD West 2002, held April 22-26 at the San Jose Convention Center, closed to high praise, and once again asserted it's position as the premier event in the software development arena. A combination of industry-leading exhibitors, diverse conference tracks, compelling speakers and numerous networking events made SD West an overwhelming success.

"SD West 2002's attendance numbers and our strong exhibitor participation, demonstrate that SD 2002 is at the epicenter of software development," said Mike Gottlieb, SD Show Director. "Our attendees, vendors, speakers and all involved were thrilled with the this year's event. Our expectations were exceeded in terms of attendance, positive exhibitor feedback, and the overall value gained by the professional developers."

Now in its 15th year, SD West is the industry's leading independent software development conference. "SD West 2002 once again provided unparalleled conference sessions in which some of the top educators in the field brought real-world knowledge and experience to the classroom," says Gottlieb. Conference attendees came away with the latest information and techniques about topics such as XML, Web Services, C++, Java, .NET, and all aspects of software management. Additionally, the conference featured 'next-wave' topics such as Ruby, Aspect-Oriented Software Development, and Cocoon, which were all well received with high classroom attendance.

The SD West Expo floor opened with a sneak preview on Tuesday evening and was packed with attendees throughout the week. A diverse array of some of the largest companies in software development and new up-and-comers made the exhibition floor the place to learn about the newest products and services. Microsoft, IBM, VA Software, Serena Software, Rational, and Yes Software were among the exhibitors.

The ballroom was full of excitement on Wednesday evening when the winners of the 2002 Software Development Jolt Product Excellence and Productivity Awards were announced by the editors of CMP's Software Development magazine, followed by the Excellence in Programming Awards ceremony presented by Dr. Dobb's Journal's Editor-in-Chief, Jonathan Erickson. The SD Developer Bowl added a light-hearted competitive edge to the evening with teams of developers testing their industry knowledge against groups of their peers.

Thought provoking keynote addresses from software development experts such as Steve McConnell, Karl Wiegers, and Scott Meyers highlighted each day. Anders Hejlsberg, Microsoft Distinguished Engineer, delivered his keynote on the Microsoft .NET platform and its family of products. Thursday's keynote by Clay Shirky, a consultant and author specializing in peer-to-peer and other distributed technologies, discussed the challenges involved in building truly scalable Web Services.

At the end of the week, attendees departed having heard from industry luminaries and with an enhanced knowledge of the most pressing issues facing the industry today.

The success of the San Jose event will be repeated at SD East 2002, which will take place in Boston, November 18-22, 2002.
