SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 25, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- InformationWeek Reports, a service for peer-based IT research and analysis, announced the release of its latest research report:  IT Process Automation.  The report encompasses analysis of results from InformationWeek's recent IT Process Automation Survey and guides technology professionals in aligning IT and business priorities and then ensuring that the execution follows a well-defined process. Three hundred and forty-five business technology professionals responded to the poll.

Research Summary:

Just 36% of the 345 business technology professionals responding to our IT Process Automation Survey are currently using tools that automate IT workflow or process, and of those deploying or planning to deploy IT automation tools, only 45% say governance is extremely important in process automation.  This is no way to get to the stated goal of automated data centers.

Findings:

  • 32% of those deploying or planning to deploy IT automation tools identify disaster recovery/failover as the most critical area to automate.
  • 42% use ITIL as the foundation of their IT process automation projects.
  • 46% blame integration difficulties for having limited IT process automation in place.
  • 51% say they're only somewhat satisfied with the IT process automation tools they've deployed.

"Some IT teams resist automation because they think success will lead to pink slips," says Lorna Garey, content director of InformationWeek Reports. "But our research shows that's not necessarily so. Just 11% of respondents who have fully deployed IT automation tools say this has led to staff reductions compared with 16% who say it's allowed staff to work in other -- hopefully more interesting -- areas."

The report author, Michael Biddick, serves as president and CTO of consultancy Fusion PPT.
